Your eyes in the sky - high level inspections using drones

Maidenhead Golf Club

"A picture paints a thousand words; drones can do so much more."

Using a camera mounted on a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) or drone for high-level inspections has become a recognised method for surveyors in recent years.  On Tuesday, 19 April, Paulo and Frank Coll brought an audience of surveyors up-to-date on the opportunities for using drones and followed this up with a practical demonstration.

Their talk covered:

  • the truth about drones - the law in relation to commercial UAVs, the operating environment for licensed pilots (such as Paulo and Frank) compared with unlicensed operators of drones;
  • the product - uses and limitations - explaining with reference to two sub-7kg drones, both suitable for indoor and outdoor operation;
  • the possibilities - ways of obtaining survey data, and comparisons with using other methods such as a cherry-picker, ladders or scaffolding in terms of cost, flexibility and response.

Safe installation and use of wood-burning stoves

Thame Barns Centre, Thame OX9 3AJ

Wood-burning stoves have become increasingly popular in recent years, driven by the higher costs of electricity, gas and oil, and by the desire to make use of wood, viewed as a sustainable fuel.

Fitted correctly by a qualified and experienced installer, wood-burning stoves are an attractive feature in a property.  But fitted DIY or by a general builder without an understanding of ventilation and flue requirements, let alone compliance with regulations, and the story is rather different.
